South Beach clay with real history
Flamingo Park Tennis Center is the heartbeat of tennis in South Beach, with 17 green Har-Tru clay courts, most of them lit, a few minutes from the sand at 1200 Meridian Avenue. There has been clay here since the 1930s, which makes it one of Miami Beach's oldest continuously running tennis venues, and the whole site was rebuilt with new Har-Tru, lighting, irrigation, and drainage in 2013. Green clay drains fast and is easy on the body, and Flamingo is the place to play it in Miami Beach.
How to get on a court
Book online through the center, where members can reserve further ahead than non-members, and walk-on play is possible when courts are open. Hourly clay-court fees are modest, so check the current rate when you book. The courts run weekday mornings to 9pm and weekends to 8pm, with lit courts going until 10pm. It is a social place by design, with leagues, round robins, and a front desk known for pairing up players, so it is an easy spot to find a game even if you arrive alone.
Who it suits
It suits clay players, anyone staying in or near South Beach, and players who want a built-in community rather than a quiet hit. The flip side of South Beach is parking, so leave extra time. The history is real too: the old Good Neighbor Championships and the Junior Orange Bowl drew future greats like Bjorn Borg, Chris Evert, and John McEnroe to these courts.
