Glen Park Tennis Courts

The Glen Park Tennis Courts sit at 62 Elk Street in San Francisco's Glen Park neighborhood, inside a rough urban canyon. Two public courts occupy the southern edge of the 66.6-acre Glen Canyon Park, ringed by eucalyptus and rock faces.

The neighborhood

Glen Park sits away from tourist San Francisco. Families from nearby bungalows, tech workers, and retirees who tend community gardens all treat the courts as an extension of their backyards. Joggers come off the hiking trails in the morning, parents rally midday around Silver Tree Day Camp kids, and evening matches run as the sun drops behind O'Shaughnessy Boulevard.
Most players arrive on foot or by bike from Chenery Street's cafes, a five-minute walk through the neighborhood. Muni's 23 bus stops at Elk and Bosworth, and drivers take the curvy approach via O'Shaughnessy and park along Elk Street near Glenda the Cow, a Holstein sign that nods to the area's dairy past. The courts function as a neighborhood gathering point, upgraded with funding from the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond.

Access and play

The courts were relocated and refreshed in a community overhaul. Public play is free and first-come, first-served, with no reservations for casual drop-ins. The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department runs organized events from the rec center uphill. There is no lighting, so play runs from dawn to twilight; summer evenings stretch toward 8 p.m.
There are no entry fees. Bring your own racket and balls; the surfaces show wear from heavy public use. Stray balls tend to roll into the grassy buffers around the canyon. Fog comes in thick from June to August, and winter rains from November to March can slick the surface, so check SF RecPark's site for closures before heading out.
There are walls for solo drills, open space for lessons, and a steady flow of 3.0 to 4.0 players who will coach a backhand. The rec center's gymnasium and community rooms host occasional clinics.

Getting there

Parking lines Elk Street's curbs, free but limited, so arrive early on weekends to find a spot below the courts near the dairy cow sign. The area sees steady foot traffic on lit paths. After dark, stick to groups and the main trail.
A five-minute walk down Chenery Street reaches Glen Coffee Roasters for pour-overs and pastries. After a match, Glen Park Station serves craft beers and pub fare. Bring layers: mornings sit in the 50s Fahrenheit, afternoons climb into the 70s, and wind funnels up the canyon.

Finding a partner in Glen Park

Doyouplay helps you find matches instead of drilling alone. Browse free by skill level and preferences, filter for Glen Park courts, and active locals show up. A 3.5 baseliner looking for a weekend partner can start a 1:1 chat and connect without the park-bench small talk, which makes the San Francisco tennis scene easier for newcomers and recent movers to join.

History

The site carries San Francisco history, from Adolph Sutro's 1850s Gum Tree Ranch to Crocker's vaudeville-era amusements, including hot-air balloons over these slopes. Today red-tailed hawks circle the canyon and laughter drifts down from the ropes course. Pick up a racket at 62 Elk and you join the neighborhood.
