Berliner Tennis Club 1904 Grün-Gold e.V.

Berliner Tennis Club 1904 Grün-Gold e.V. sits at Paradestraße 28-32 in Berlin's Tempelhof-Schöneberg district. Members founded it in 1904, and its nine sand courts draw players who like the slide of clay underfoot.

Neighborhood and Access

Tempelhof-Schöneberg carries a lived-in Berlin feel: industrial edges, immigrant bakeries, U-Bahn stations, and graffiti murals that nod to the district's working-class roots. Paradestraße runs through it, a short walk from the elevated U6 line at Ullsteinstraße station, so the club stays easy to reach from Kreuzberg or Neukölln. Cyclists ride in along paths from nearby Tempelhof Field, the former airport turned parkland, and drivers find street parking near the club's front gate without the congestion of central Mitte.
The club reads as local. Families rally on weekends, retirees practice serves at dawn, and juniors chase regional rankings with coaches who have spent decades here. This is not the polish of Grunewald's elite clubs. The green-gold banner flies over a working club where balls crack against the clay.

Courts, Hours, and Costs

The club opens daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Its nine outdoor sand courts, known locally as "Plätze," take players of all levels, from beginners to national contenders like Michael Buttkus, the club's Herren50 player ranked second in Germany. Members get cheaper court time and a spot in league play, including the Damen 30-1 squad that won promotion to the Ostliga last fall. Non-members can often walk on during quieter slots for a guest fee of €10-20 per hour, payable at the pro shop. The fee rises for peak evenings and tournaments such as the €4,000 prize-money Ranglisten event set for late July.
Book through the club's online system or by phone. Players water the courts before and after play to keep the red clay primed. These are outdoor courts only, so winter rallies mean layers, and snow or heavy rain sends everyone into the clubhouse. The sand gives a softer slide than hard courts. Bring flats or sneakers you can break in, since the surface rewards grip and patience.

Getting There and Around

Park on Paradestraße's side streets or the club's lot, but watch for resident permits after 9 a.m. amid the one-ways. The area feels secure for a solo evening hit, with lit paths and members around. After your match, the on-site restaurant opens onto a terrace for schnitzel or salads with a cold Schöfferhofer.
Walk five minutes west for coffee at a Turkish-run Konditorei on Tempelhofer Damm, where strong kahve goes with flaky börek, or get falafel from a small spot near the U-Bahn. Rain moves play indoors, so check wetter.com. The sand courts drain fast and hold up under mist, but a dry summer means more watering. Pack layers. February mornings bite, and July heat calls for shade breaks on the terrace.
